If you have heard about microchipping pets, but not sure what that means or the benefits, or if you haven't heard of this new
technology, you're not alone. Hannah is wondering what this microchipping stuff is all about too!
A microchip is a small chip about the size and shape of a large grain of rice with a unique number in it. Take 2 Rescue uses 24PetWatch brand microchips. They can be read by scanners made by other microchip manufacturers such as Avid and Home Again.
The microchip is inserted in between the shoulder blades of dogs or cats using a needle in a process very similar to a vaccination.
The number in the microchip is read using a hand held scanner. Many animal shelters or veterinary clinics have a scanner.
Each of our dogs are microchipped. After adopting one of our dogs, you will need to register them to you with 24PetWatch. Registration is free and should be kept up to date. It lasts for as long as you own your pet. The microchips also come with a tag to attach to your pet's collar. This allows anyone without a scanner to know that your pet has a microchip. It also gives them the unique number of the chip and a toll free phone number to contact 24PetWatch. While the microchip is not intended to replace a collar and dog license, it does act as additional measure to reunite your pet with you should your pet ever get lost.
