Finding a Reputable Rescue
Whether you have found a stray, are looking to rehome your dog or want to adopt a dog, it is important that you know who you are giving your dog to or getting your dog from. Unfortunately, there are organizations and people out there who perhaps meant well at one time, but have become overwhelmed or careless and are just hoarding dogs, keeping them in poor conditions without proper vet care, adequate food, water, shetler, etc. There are also those who are just trying to make money and do not really care where the dogs end up, if they fit into the family, if the family understands the breeds particular needs, etc. They will charge high adoption fees and the dogs may not have their vet work completed, be spayed or neutered, etc. One big thing you want to look for in either case is if the person/organization is willing to show their facility. If they want to meet you in a parking lot or something like that to avoid you seeing their facility, there is usually a reason. Secondly, do they spay or neuter ALL animals before adopting them out? This is key and will speak volumes about the organization's beliefs and intentions. Rescue is not just about saving the dog from the pound, abusive situation, etc but also about helping to PREVENT future dogs from having the same fate. There is no reason to send any animal out of a rescue shelter intact. For more information on the myth that a dog should have one litter or about early age spay and neuter, please visit : http://ezinearticles.com/?Pediatric-Spay-Neuter---The-Basics&id=490566 or http://www.columbusdogconnection.com/PedSpayNeuter.htm. Another thing you can do is to check the rescue's references. What does their vet think of them, do they provide vet care for their animals? What does the local area animal control know about them? Have they seen their facility? Guidestar.org is a wonderful resource for verifing if an organization is really a non-profit organization. Verify their address. Petfinder.com is a good place to search for a dog or a list of rescues and shelters. If you are looking for information on Pit Bull specific rescue, please visit Pit Bull Rescue Central. |
